Social Media
My social media presence is quite good, as well as this blog, I also have a Facebook page dedicated to my production company as well as an Instagram account that promotes my own projects as well as reviewing films.
As well as these accounts, i also use public and closed Facebook groups to network between, monitoring job activity and availability throughout the industry.
My Instagram account has provided many connections, as well as interviewing and talking with actors in films such as Goodfellas, The Big Short and Mad Max.
through these social media platforms and my extensive list of contacts, I'm able to keep in touch, and provide/create many possible job opportunities in the future.
The most recent example involves Adam and AJ, BAFTA winning filmmakers who've visited the college as of late to talk about their projects moving forward. We sat down and talked about the upcoming 'Unbroken' with a writer from London, in which we expressed our opinions on the north and the lifestyle we have here.
We've maintained contact with AJ and his team, as well as brainstorming narrative cues and ideas with them upon there visits back to the college, we intend to maintain future contact as the project is well on it's way to becoming reality on a widely recognised television channel.
I've also encountered networking opportunities with the head of the Newcastle Film Festival, whilst holding an acting workshop, we discussed the ins and outs of the film industry and he gave his best insights. One of our films from the course managed to make the cut for the Newcastle Film Festival and we've maintained contact with them since.
My U-Films experience has also helped with networking, I've collaborated with third parties to create promotional videos - including Preston Park, NETA, Stockton Riverside College etc.
Networking Techniques
Remember People’s Names When you’re introduced to someone new, it’s not always easy to immediately commit his/her name to memory. The following tricks can help with that.
Repeat the person’s name two or three times.Make Small Talk or Conversation
Make an association between their name and something or someone else.
It’s important to be able to initiate or carry a conversation with people. If you don’t feel particularly adept at that, try to of some questions ahead of time that will help generate a dialogue or keep it going. But try to avoid controversial topics such as politics and religion. Below is a list of possible subjects, and a related question for each:
Work: “What was the first job you ever had?”
Entertainment: “What’s your favorite TV show?”
Food: “What’s your favorite comfort food?”
Travel: “Where is the last place you traveled to?”
Life story: “What is one of your hidden talents?”
Approach People Who Are Senior to You
While the idea of reaching out to someone who has a higher-level job than you might be intimidating, those connections can sometimes be extremely valuable. Here are some ways to go about it:
Get someone to make an introduction.Be careful not to assume that only people in more senior positions can help you. It can be easier and just as productive to network with people who are either at the same level or even junior to you, or who don’t have as much experience.
If you can’t get introduced by someone, try a direct approach (e.g., e-mail or call).
Be professional and succinct.
Adapt your style to match this person’s.
Be clear about your skills and expertise.
Create a simple agenda.
Meet them and follow up.
Use Proper Networking Etiquette
As with any social encounter, it’s important to follow appropriate etiquette — such as:
Make a positive first impression.
Move from guest behavior to host behaviour.
Never assume that people are acknowledged or appreciated. When you’re interacting with someone, it’s a good idea to say something nice about them, without being disingenuous.
Be professional when using e-mail, and try to use the word “you” more often than the word “I.”
Anyone with whom you’ve spent more than 15 minutes should be acknowledged in some way afterward.
If you say you’ll do something, do it in a timely manner.
