Documentary Treatment

Documentary Treatment

For my documentary this year I will tackling the issue of social media and both its positive and negative effects on a younger demographic (aged primarily 25 and under). This documentary will aim to provide a fair, balanced case for both sides through a more forward, Louis Theroux-esque style of presentation.

Text Box: The approach will be more involved, in an attempt to challenge as well as understand. I intend to go into this with an unbiased stance and will hopefully create a balanced documentary and credible evidence for both sides of the discussion

I intend to interview a professional psychiatrist who works with children, to see if there has been any correlation between social media and a rise of depression in young people. I also intend to carry out primary research via interviews with students, the target demographic, and their study their interactions with social media as well as investigate any stories and events they may have come across/been involved with.

Text Box: I’ll be sure to include the multiple types of social media, and how they keep their user base engaged.
I’ll make sure that people unfamiliar with some aspects of the sites are up to speed and informed correctly.

Text Box: The interview with the psychiatrist will hopefully add a particular level of professionalism as well as a credible source of information for the documentary. I’m interested to hear what she says, as it will no doubt be a strong point of reference for the entire documentary.Text Box: I’m aiming to create something that’s visually appealing as well as informative, as a younger demographic tend not to care for run of the mill, basic documentary styles. Examples of making the documentary more visually appealing include more interesting kinds of shots, a higher quality of editing and a good use of sound.Image result for editing

This documentary will be split into four episodes.

Episode 1 will introduce the audience to social media as well as what the documentary is aiming to achieve with its research.  I’ll introduce myself as an unbiased party and set the tone for the following episodes, the episode will end with the psychiatrist’s interview.

Episode 2 will focus on the negative effects of social media, focusing on primary research with students, whilst also using secondary research to further back up the evidence provided.

Episode 3 will focus on the positive effects, will be an interesting angle to take as it’s usually ignored in documentaries related to social media. The same rules to evidence apply.

Episode 4 will focus on the future of mental health and social media, and the actions being taken to make sure future generations of children and young adults benefit, rather than suffer at the hands of technology.
