Analysis of Media Campaigns
Due to issues concerning Blogger I was unable to update my previous blog on this subject, therefore I've had to create this second blog including the missing information from the end of the first.
As for Net Neutrality, the correlation between itself and the fight for LGBT rights is very strong indeed, the use of social media to bring political attention to a serious issue as well as giving particular communities/minorities that other wise would be ignored by the mainstream media, the importance of free speech becomes paramount, which leads me to an unsettling realisation.
If the removal of Net Neutrality were to go ahead, the average Joe would have no platform in which to voice their own opinions, to be more specific, they would have a platform in which to share their issues or spark a campaign, but there is no guarantee it would ever reach their intended audience due to government filtering - when they can actively reconstruct the data being pooled through the internet, who is to say they won't mute particular voices in an attempt to create a false sense of peace under that particular government's rule. This really enforces the question of the legal morality surround the act to remove Net Neutrality - would the LGBT community have ever achieved what they have had their social media platform been removed from under their feet? Is there any guarantee that the government will not close off other communities/minorities in the future? We have no answer for this yet, but as this analysis has stated, social media is a powerhouse not to be underestimated, and neither are the people behind it.
There may not be a correlation between these two campaigns as such, but the social media aspect connects them both, both campaigns use media platforms to further their cause, whether it's hashtags. trending topics or a mass following. Through this, they are connected in some sense, like a lot of other campaigns such as the fight for women's rights.
As a side note - if you haven't watched USA's Mr. Robot, please do so, it's outlook on modern society mixed in with a brilliant narrative and skilled team behind the camera, it's really one not to miss, especially in times like this.
