Social Action Project - Breakdown

Social Action Project: Breakdown

In this blog I'll be breaking down my role in the my group's social action project: Be Mindful, Be Aware.

As described in my previous post on the project, my role was to research the intricacies of mental health, understand the cause and effect and analyse different advertisements tackling mental health. I also got in touch with a representative from Stem4, a mental health organisation located within London. I was given a few guidelines for tackling such a delicate nature such as suicide, especially on a platform where it could be potentially viewed by a lot of people.

I took on the role of assistant director, supporting Ellie Garland as director of the project. I supplied the needed information from the project and from there we started creating a script and schedule. I sat down with Ellie and discussed the basis of our ideas for script and discussed her idea for a centric character to embody the issue of depression and mental health. I was able to contribute to the script by using the knowledge I'd gained prior to make sure that the terminology was correct and the subject respected. We avoid using terms like suicide in an effort not to glorify it - instead we used terms such as "took their own life" to fully emphasise the impact of depression.

I also created questions for our interview with the cast of Chatroom, I really wanted to delve deep into the inner though processes of actor tackling mental health issues, I wanted to know the effects (if it had any) and their fears approaching an audience with this subject.

Another major part of my contribution to the project is the social media aspect that I took on with Anthony Carter, I decided to target an audience via Instagram, one of the most prominent and influential social media platforms currently available.

I also assisted the crew on set, monitoring filming conditions e.g. noise, making sure the actors are comfortable and that crew know what they're doing (minus the director), I took photos on set to promote our social media and document in our work to assist with marking.
